Children from across the city have been
rewarded for fighting “Literacy Crimes”.
The children had taken part in a competition
to spot examples of poor spelling and
grammar in signs, advertisements and notices
all around Cardiff.
It was all part of the “Reading Power” scheme
– which aims to raise standards of literacy
among children and young people.
The eagle-eyed young people who spotted
the mistakes were presented with prizes at
County Hall on Monday, May 16th when
Cardiff Council Chief Executive, Jon House,
was joined by teachers and parents,
grandparents and siblings to congratulate
them on their work.
The winning entries came from: Caitlin
Chapman, Elis and Tesni Rowlands, Ellie
Williams, Maggie Friend and Morgan
Rees, while Aneurin Dixon, Gruffydd
Jones, Keith Vital, Luke Richards and
Rhodri Williams were all highly
commended.
Executive Member for Education and
Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway,
said:
“Reading Power” aims to tackle poor
literacy by helping parents and carers
understand how important good reading
and writing skills are to their children’s
future.”
'Look out for our new competition in
the new academic year!'

| Croeso i Ysgol Gymraeg Pwll Coch |
Teulu Mawr Ym Ni i Gyd.
Agorwyd Ysgol Gymraeg Pwll Coch yn 1996, gan symud i'r adeilad presennol yn 1999. Mae'n ysgol sy'n dal i dyfu o ran nifer y disgyblion a bydd yn cyrraedd ei llaw dwf yn 2008. Mae Uned Feithrin yn rhan o'r ysgol.
Mae talgylch yr ysgol yn eang ac yn amrywiol ac yn cynnwys ardaloedd deheuol a gorllweinol dinas Caerdydd.
Arolygwyd yr ysgol ym mis Mai 2005 un sylw gan ESTYN oedd:-
"Mae Ysgol Gymraeg Pwll Coch yn gymuned gofalgar lle mae'r disgyblion yn cyd-weithio a chyd-chwarae'n hapus. Mae'r ysgol yn llwyddo i sefydlu ymwybyddiaeth gref o Gymreictod a balchder at yr iaith Gymraeg yn eu disgyblion. Mae safon ymddygiad yn eithriadol."
Ysgol Gymraeg Pwll Coch was established in 1996 and moved to its present location in September 1999. The school continues to grow in number and will reach full capacity in 2008. A Nursery Unit forms part of the school.
The school has a large and varied catchment area which includes the southern and western areas of the city of Cardiff.
The school was last inspected in May 2005. ESTYN commented that:-
" Ysgol Gymraeg Pwll Coch is a homely and caring community where pupils work and play together happily. The school succeeds in establishing in its pupils a strong awareness of Welshness and pride in the Welsh language. Standards of behaviour are exceptionally good." |

| Diogewlch ar y we/Safety update using the Internet |
Background Information
Discover the digital world together…safely!
Safer Internet Day is organised by the Insafe Network each February to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile internet, especially amongst young people.
It’s a global initiative that has been running since 2004 and this year the day is focusing on connecting generations. Young people, parents and grandparents are being encouraged to discover the digital world together and safely.
This year’s topic of connecting generations will look at the reach of the online world across all generations and cultures and encourages families to work together to stay safe online. Whether you are 5, 40, or 75 years old, whether you use the internet once a month or several times a day – each person has something different to bring to the table that can help shape online experiences and understanding of online competencies and safety.
For further information on the Safer Internet Day please visit www.saferinternetday.org
Activity in South Wales Police
Here in South Wales Police we will be taking part in the day and helping to promote the internet safety message. We will be using our social media twitter and facebook sites to provide internet safety tips, promote relevant websites and to answer questions about keeping safe online.
You can find us on twitter @swpolice and on facebook /swpolice
School Community Police Officers (SCPO) will be giving talks about internet safety to pupils and parents, subject to confirmation. Please contact your local SCPO for further information.
Useful Websites
There are a number of websites about internet safety but one of the best resources is www.thinkuknow.co.uk which is provided by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre. The website contains specific information for young people, teachers, parents and carers.
Another good website is www.getsafeonline.org which provides independent advice on using the internet confidently, securely and safely. Internet giant Google have been running a ‘Good to Know’ campaign with Citizens Advice Bureau which aims to help people stay safe on the internet and manage the information that gets shared online. The campaign website is www.google.co.uk/goodtoknow
Key Messages: Internet Safety Advice
Being aware of the potential risks whilst online
People, especially young people feel less inhibited when online, and often unknowingly share personal information. You don’t always know who you’re talking to online, as it’s easy to hide an identity. It’s often easy to forget that actions online have consequences offline.
These risks can be managed by keeping personal information private, ensuring profile settings on social networking sites are set to private, and by having strong access passwords. Also be sure to add the ClickCEOP app to your social networking profiles.
Another key part of keeping safe online is about good face to face communication with parents or guardians. Parents should not be intimidated by technology, and young people should show parents what sites they are going on, and be sure to report back any concerns whilst online. A web safe browser should be installed on computers and filtering software used on mobile phones and other devices. There’s many ways to access the internet, and not just through the computer at home.
Privacy
Have a think about the amount of personal information you give out when using the internet and social networking sites, as this potentially could put you at risk. Your personal information may very much be in the public domain.
Your full name, home address, mobile number, workplace or school name, photos, and social plans potentially could provide a lot of information to strangers about you. It’s important to be privacy savvy, and you can do this by setting privacy settings to private, being careful what photographs you upload, and not giving away clues about you and your whereabouts.
Cyberbullying
Bullying can take place online, but there are things that can be done about it, and it’s important to report any incident of cyberbullying. If you are being bullied online please inform an adult that you trust, and do not respond or confront the bully. It is also important to save any abusive texts, emails, and other evidence.
For further help and advice about cyberbullying please visit www.cybermentors.org.uk, which is all about young people helping and supporting each other online. Online CyberMentors are trained to listen and help you whether you are being bullied online or offline.
For further information on Safer Internet Day 2012 please contact your School Community Police Officer.
